CONDENSATION
Condensation or “sweating” on your windows is a natural occurrence caused by excess humidity or water vapor in the air. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air. When warm moist air comes into contact with a colder glass surface, the air cools down causing the water vapor to condense into its liquid form. Condensation is more common in the winter and summer months when there are extreme differences between the inside and outside temperatures.
All windows will have occasional condensation but it shouldn’t be ongoing.
Cooking and showering can add condensation to the interior of your home and this is no cause for concern. However, excessive condensation can cause serious damage to the important and expensive parts of your home:
- Window frames and sills
- Paint or wallpaper surrounding your windows
- Drywall and studs under the surface of your walls
- Exterior siding
- Floors and sub-floors under the windows
If you experience excessive condensation in your home, it may be time to replace your windows. New energy-efficient windows will not eliminate condensation, but they can help reduce the occurrence of condensation by decreasing the temperature difference between the surface of the windows and the air in the room. There is a scale in the industry called “CRF”, or Condensation Resistance Factor, which measures a window’s ability to resist condensation, relative to other windows. The higher the CRF, the less likely you are to get condensation. Combining high CRF windows, such as our Provia Endure windows, with appropriate levels of indoor humidity, can lessen the risk of dangerous indoor mold and other problems caused by condensation.
